KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Endurance swimmer Penny Palfrey muscled past the halfway mark Saturday as she pushed through the Florida Straits, enduring jellyfish stings but otherwise encountering perfect conditions in her attempt to become the first woman to swim unassisted more than 100 miles from Cuba to the Florida Keys.

The British-born Australian was swimming steady and strong and reported no physical complaints, according to her support team.

At about 4:30 p.m. EDT (2030 GMT) roughly 34 hours into the swim, the 49-year-old grandmother was 69 miles (111 kilometers) from her starting point at a marina in the Cuban capital, according to her web site's GPS tracking report. She was positioned about 38 miles (61.15 kilometers) southwest of Key West.

Previously, her personal best was 67 miles (108 kilometers) when she swam between Little Cayman and Grand Cayman islands last year, according to Andrea Woodburn, part of her support team in the Keys.

Palfrey reapplied sunscreen and grease to prevent chafing and said the water conditions had been excellent other than the extreme heat. She even spotted a few hammerhead sharks and dolphin pods. Crew members said she was barking orders at team members accompanying her on kayaks and a catamaran as she kept up a torrid pace in a battle that tested the limits of human endurance.

She is "physically and mentally strong," Woodburn said, adding that the bathwater-warm waters remained calm. "The conditions couldn't be better and she continues to progress to the Florida Keys."

The 20-year veteran of distance swimming is no stranger to jellyfish stings, which forced her to abort two past swims in Hawaii.

Palfrey set off from Havana early Friday. A member of her crew was tweeting to fans, while a webpage updated her location every 10 minutes or so based on data from a GPS device worn by the swimmer.

The GPS device showed she reached the halfway point near midday Friday, according to her website.

The daunting effort has been commonly reported as a 103-mile (166-kilometer) swim, however the GPS coordinates suggest it is more like 107 miles (172 kilometer).

Multiple challenges loomed as Palfrey endured a second day, including the prospect of physical and mental fatigue and fending off dehydration, hypothermia and potentially dangerous marine life. At her current rate, it would take her a bit more than 56 hours to complete the swim, slightly above her initial estimates. Woodburn believes if she continues the pace, Palfrey could arrive Sunday morning.

If Palfrey succeeds, she'll go in the record books as the first woman to swim the Straits without the aid of a shark cage. Instead she's relying on equipment that surrounds her with an electrical field to deter the predators. Her support team consisted of more than a dozen navigators, handlers and medical personnel who were escorting her on the 44-foot (13-meter) catamaran Sealuver.

Woodburn said that Palfrey is being hydrated every half-hour with a liquid concoction containing electrolytes and carbohydrates.

Australian Susie Maroney made the crossing in 1997 at age 22, but with a shark cage. American Diana Nyad made two unsuccessful cageless attempts last year on either side of her 62nd birthday, but had to call them off due to a debilitating asthma attack and painful Portuguese man o' war stings. She has announced plans to try again this summer.

Nyad's twitter feed displayed several messages focused on Palfrey's effort.

"I'm sure our team will learn from her crossing," one tweet reported. "Just as, I'm sure, Penny's team has learned from Diana's attempts"

Nyad's trainer, Bonnie Stoll, tweeted "Right now, Diana and I are staying focused on Diana's swim. We are in tunnel vision mode."

Palfrey began the swim in a regular sporting swimsuit, but put on a porous, non-buoyant Lycra bodysuit Friday night to provide cover down to the wrists and ankles to fend off jellyfish stings. But as the sun rose Saturday morning, she changed back to the sport swimsuit.

So you have seen, read and heard all about Internet Marketing and feel you?d like a piece of the action.

There?s no doubt about it ? a lot of money can be made on the internet and if you have the right knowledge, a piece of that pie can certainly be yours.

And that is where the problem lies? The right knowledge.

You see, if you search for ?Internet Marketing? on Google, you will get a massive number of results ? I?ve just done it whilst writing this article and got 34,700,000 results.

Here?s a scenario ? you come across a great web page, it promises to share the ?secrets? of internet marketing success. It sound great ? for less than $ 100, you can have the ?secret? and start making money right away ? by this time next year, you?ll be bringing in over a million dollars ? the sales copy just pulls you in and you take out your credit card?

But once you have paid your money and downloaded the eBook, software, video etc? that is going to change your life, you then realize that it isn?t such a wonderful product after all.

You see another great offer and out comes the credit card again?

Sound familiar? You?re not alone ? I?ve been seduced by great sales copy more times than I can remember.

Don?t let me put you off though ? there are some good guys out there, that will share their knowledge with you for a fair price. A good mentor will guide you through the pitfalls and advise you where you should be channeling your efforts.

So back to Internet Marketing?

When you hear the term ?Internet Marketing? what do you think it means?

There are many aspects to Internet Marketing, but it can basically be broken down into the following areas:

Niche Marketing

Affiliate Marketing

List Building

Generating Traffic

Email Marketing

Now these five things are not really separate ?modules? but more ?ingredients? ? like the ingredients of a cake, they all come together to make the finished product.

Niche Marketing.

With Niche Marketing, you will find a niche within the market ? What?s a niche? I like to think of it as a market within a market.

For example, Golf is a large market, but left hand golfers who want to improve their swing ? that?s a small section of the golf market ? a niche.

Find a product that appeals to this niche and you can target them.

And the product can be a physical thing such as an instruction book or DVD, or a digital product that the buyer can download such as an eBook or video file.

Affiliate Products

To make money on the internet ? you need to sell something, So what do you sell? The easiest thing is to sell other people?s products for a commission ? that way, you don?t have the hassle of sending stuff out.

In the above example, you could sign up as an affiliate for Amazon and sell instructional books or DVDs. For digital products, I?d go with Clickbank ? find a suitable product and promote it.

Once you have identified a niche, you find a product to feed it ? if no product exists, but the market is there ? create your own product and make a killing.

If you HAVE created your own product ? then you can have others sell it for you as your affiliates. It works both ways.

List Building.

To target potential buyers within the niche, you need to get them onto your list. List building is probably the most important aspect of Internet Marketing. Because people that subscribe to your list have actively shown an interest in what you have to offer.

And if they have already bought from you, they are far easier to sell to again.

Generating Traffic.

But to build a list, you need to get traffic to your web page so that visitors can opt in, which is where search engine optimization (SEO) comes in.

Search engines are used to find things online and produce results based on rules. These rules are very complex. Search Engine Optimization takes into account these rules and enhances your position in the search engine results.

To get visitors to your site ? you need the right keywords that the search engines will find. With a niche market, the keywords will be searched for by smaller groups of people, but there will be less results for those keywords in a google search and so less competition.

As an example, I?ve just searched Google for ?Left Handed Golf? and got 97,000 results. Compare that with the results when I just searched for ?Golf? ? that gave me over 335,000,000 (335 Million). So the left handed golf search result was less than 0.03% of the overall golf market.

Now golf is a massive market ? and I have probably over simplified the percentage ? but imagine using the same principle on smaller markets.

Email Marketing

Once you have build a list of people interested in your niche, you send them regular emails ? not always with a selling proposition, but that?s the ultimate aim.

Send a regular newsletter or bulletin about the topic of the niche and when you have a new product they may be interested in, send them an email about it with a link to the sales page.

If they don?t buy, send a follow up email ? if they do send them a thank you email ? offer an additional product at a discount.

Keep in touch with your subscribers. Quite often a subscriber will be on your list for several months before he or she makes their first purchase. By keeping in touch, you?ll build a relationship with them so when you do have a great offer for them, they?ll think ?I know this guy ? he?s OK?? and you will have more chance of making a sale.

To get the right keywords, you need to identify the niche

For email marketing, you need to build a list.

Before selling affiliate products, you need to know the niche.

This is a general overview of Internet Marketing and it goes deeper ? for example copy writing ? you need to have a great page to convince your visitors to opt into your list. And of course there?s Google?s Adsense and Adwords? But to benefit from these you need traffic ? back to one or our main ingredients?

Luckily there are some excellent tools available to help you make a success of internet marketing, but it?s not a get rich quick thing ? despite what you may read. Sure, there are the big boys who can make a million dollars in three months, but even they had to start at the beginning and work their way to the top ? it won?t happen overnight.

If you are looking to make a good living from the internet, you need to start slowly and build it up over time. There will be a very steep learning curve, after a while you will feel like giving up ? there will be a period where you are having money going out, but none coming in ? but stick with it, apply the right knowledge and you will be successful.

Pelosi on Holder vote: What GOP is doing is 'contemptible, even for them'

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she would join members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) when they walk out of the vote on the resolution finding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress.

Pelosi initially said she preferred to vote against the resolution, but said she has been moved by the CBC plan to walk out later today.

"Perhaps that's the best approach for us to take," she said on the House floor. "How else can we impress upon the American people without scaring them about what is happening here?"

Later in her remarks, she told her Democratic colleagues to do as they see fit, a sign that many more Democrats could walk out when the House votes.

"So now I say to those who have a doubt about how they want to proceed, that instead of doing what I said before ? which was just to come and to treat this as a bill before the Congress and express my no ? listening to the unconscionable presentation, I want to join my CBC colleagues in boycotting the vote when we have the walkout after we have the debate," she said.

Pelosi earlier said the Republicans' attack on Holder for his role in the Fast and Furious gun-walking program is a politically motivated move ?based on a false premise,? and she vowed to leave the chamber floor if the rest of her caucus did the same.

?There's an attitude in our caucus that we should not honor the process,? Pelosi said during her weekly press briefing in the Capitol. ?I myself intend to stay long enough to vote 'no,' and ? many in the Caucus think that we should do a complete walk-off. I honor the wish of my Caucus.?

As many as 120 Democrats may walk out in opposition to Thursday?s contempt vote on Holder, according to one lawmaker.

Rep. Raul Grivalva (D-Ariz.) told The Hill that he expects ?over 120 Democrats? to protest the unprecedented Republican-led vote by staging a walkout and holding a press conference on the East front of the Capitol.

Democrats have been trying to drum up support for the walkout, holding a caucus meeting Thursday morning where members handed out copies of a recent investigative story in Fortune that refuted allegations of ?gun-walking? in the botched Fast and Furious operation that is at the center of the contempt measure.

Several Democrats have said they will buck party lines and support the contempt resolutions, in the wake of the National Rifle Association?s (NRA) decision to score the vote.

At least four Democrats in GOP-leaning districts ? Reps. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.), Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.), Jim Matheson (D-Utah) and John Barrow (D-Ga.) ? have pledged their support for the contempt measure.

Rep. Jason Altmire (D-Penn.) told The Hill in an interview before Thursday?s vote that he was still undecided about how he was planning to vote.

Altmire pointed to his support of a Democratic-led contempt measure in 2008 of two senior White House officials in President George W. Bush?s administration, and said that he was trying to find out why he wouldn?t hold the Obama administration in contempt for similarly refusing to respond to a congressional subpoena.

More than a dozen Democrats voted in favor of a rule governing floor debate for the civil and criminal contempt resolutions. The rule was approved by every Republican as well in a vote of 254-173 in its favor.

The Democratic support is key for Republicans as they try to defend the legitimacy of the contempt measure to voters and parry counterattacks from Democrats stating that they are leading a ?witch hunt.?

The proposed Democratic walkout is reminiscent of a similar move made by Republicans in 2008 during a Democratic-led vote on whether to hold two senior staffers in President George W. Bush?s administration in contempt of Congress.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) ? then the minority leader ? led the walkout with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) following closely behind him. Issa, the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is the sponsor of the contempt resolution against Holder.

?The House floor is the scene of a partisan, political stunt,? said Boehner at the time. House Democrats have been expressing similar comments about the Holder contempt measure.?

Republicans have brought the contempt resolution against Holder for his response to a long-running investigation into the Fast and Furious operation, a program that sanctioned the sale of firearms to known straw purchasers in order to track those guns to Mexican drug cartels. Law enforcers have lost track of hundreds of the weapons, and a pair of assault weapons linked to the botched sting were recovered at the scene of the murder of a U.S. border patrol agent in late 2010.

Behind Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Republicans have accused Holder of withholding documents they say are vital to their investigation ? a charge Holder has denied.

The contempt resolution passed through the Oversight panel on a strictly party-line vote last week, and the full House will vote on the measure Thursday evening.

If it passes, as it?s expected to do, it will mark the first time in the history of the country that a sitting cabinet member has been held in contempt of Congress.

Democrats have hammered GOP leaders for attacking Holder simply to embarrass President Obama amid his tough reelection fight ? a charge Pelosi leveled again Thursday.

?What the Republicans are doing with this motion on the floor today is contemptible ? even for them,? she said. ?This is something that makes a witch hunt look like a day at the beach.?

The House is scheduled to vote on the GOP's contempt resolution at around 5 p.m. Thursday.

Australopithecus sediba, believed to be an early relative of modern-day humans, enjoyed a diet of leaves, fruits, nuts, and bark, which meant they probably lived in a more wooded environment than is generally thought, a surprising find published in the current issue of Nature magazine by an international team of researchers that includes a Texas A&M University anthropologist.

Darryl de Ruiter, associate professor in the Department of Anthropology, says the new findings are in contrast to previously documented diets of other hominin species and suggests that Australopithecus sediba had a different living environment than other hominins in the region. Previous research had shown that the australopiths of South Africa lived in the vicinity of grassy and open savannah-like areas, though it was unclear whether they actually occupied a savannah habitat, or if they lived in forested margins near the grasslands.

The team examined teeth from skeletal remains of a group of newly discovered hominins found several years ago in a South African cave about 30 miles northwest of Johannesburg and dated to about 1.98 million years old. The team, comprised of researchers from the United States, Africa, Europe and Australia, named the new species Australopithecus sediba and demonstrated that it displayed a mosaic of both human-like and ape-like characteristics shared both with other forms of Australopithecus and with modern-day humans.

"By examining material recovered from their teeth using diverse tools ranging from dental picks and laser ablation devices, we were able to determine precisely what they were eating," de Ruiter explains.

"This gives us a very clear picture of their diet, and it was surprising. It shows that they ate more fruits and leaves than any other hominin fossil ever examined, more like what a chimp might eat. There was no evidence of them eating native grasses of the area at that time, which is what we see in other australopiths in the region."

Australopithecus is a genus of hominins that is now extinct. Ape-like in structure, yet walking bipedally similar to modern humans, they are considered to have played a significant role in human evolution, and it is generally held among anthropologists that a form of Australopithecus eventually evolved into modern humans.

The Texas A&M anthropologist says the analysis of phytoliths structures found in plants that often get trapped in plaque on teeth alongside examination of the chemical makeup of the hominin teeth, suggests that they had a varied diet, and diet of early Australopithecus is a key component central to the study of human origins.

"It shows they had a diet more similar to that of a chimp than anything else," he notes, "though we cannot yet say how much overlap existed between the diets of hominins and chimps.

"They ate fruits, tree bark, nuts, leaves, and sedges, plants such as papyrus or cypress. They might also have consumed some type of animal protein, perhaps in the form of insects or meat, but a lot more research will be required before we can say for sure one way or the other.

"Our findings clearly show they had access to more food sources than we had previously established," he notes.

The Texas A&M anthropologist says the analysis of phytoliths structures found in plants that often get trapped in plaque on teeth alongside examination of the chemical makeup of the hominin teeth, suggests that they had a varied diet, and diet of early Australopithecus is a key component central to the study of human origins.

"It shows they had a diet more similar to that of a chimp than anything else," he notes, "though we cannot yet say how much overlap existed between the diets of hominins and chimps.

"They ate fruits, tree bark, nuts, leaves, and sedges, plants such as papyrus or cypress. They might also have consumed some type of animal protein, perhaps in the form of insects or meat, but a lot more research will be required before we can say for sure one way or the other.

"Our findings clearly show they had access to more food sources than we had previously established," he notes.

The Cardinals beat the Marlins in extras last night, but umpire Bob Davidson made it all the harder when he screwed up a double-switch made by Mike Matheny which cost the Cards Allen Craig.

The short version: when Matheny put reliever Victor Marte into the game, he signaled ?five? with his hands, meaning that he was taking over David Freese?s position in the lineup, with Freese being the third baseman or the five-position, defensively (he was batting seventh). After a batter had batted, however, Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen came out and said told Davidson that Matheny meant the five-hole in the lineup, which had been occupied by Allen Craig.

Davidson inexplicably agreed with Guillen regarding what Matheny meant, said that the pitcher was supposed to be batting fifth now and that Allen Craig had to leave the game. This later led to the Cardinals having to use a pitcher to pinch hit in extra innings. Which worked out ? he got an RBI ? but still.

Later the on-field mics picked up Davidson telling Ozzie that he ?f****d up,? and that Matheny had, in fact, told him that he wanted the pitcher in the seven-hole. Too late, of course.

Just another day in Mr. Davidson?s neighborhood.

In this way, you most probably would be able to complete your task on time, and yet manage to attend to the important matters arising your family. That is negotiation. But whether it is a business negotiation or a personal negotiation, you would still need to acquire the imperative negotiation skills. In the context of negotiation, you are supposed to come to a consensus between you and the other party.

In the end, it becomes a win-win situation for both parties. So what does it take to achieve this? When making business dealings, the first thing you are most encouraged to do is pre-negotiation.

This is where you make preparations as to your purpose of negotiation and what you wish to achieve at the end of it. This can be done by means of writing.
You should also include the possible queries that the other party could bombard you with. This can contribute to a more professional way of settling the matter.

Most importantly, to make certain that the negotiation runs smoothly, you must display your confidence and authority. But that does not mean you control every single thing that revolves around the matter. Remember, you want to come to a consensus with the other party.

Let's take the previous example of your child wanting a bar of chocolate and you wanting him or her to finish his or her homework. Do you want your child to keep bugging you for the chocolate? Do you want your child to take full control of you all the time? I don't think so. So this is where you get a little but authoritative and appear confident of what you are doing. You do not feel like you are doing any harm to him or her. You just want him or her to finish the homework.

But at the same time, even you should not take full control of your child's actions. Your child should not be deprived of his or her likings for chocolates. So you come up with a 'deal'. You make sure that the child does his or her homework. Take a look at his or her workbook. Can you see that the homework is done prim and proper? If that is the case, like you have promised, you would buy him or her the bar of chocolate.

So are you both gaining from this? Yes.The child gets the chocolate, while you feel relieved that the child has completed the homework. There you have it! A win-win situation.

The same concept applies when making business dealings.
Let us say... you are a salesperson who promoted an oven for sale. You even conducted a demo on how effective the oven is by baking a cake.

A customer, upon viewing the demo, seems keen on it and wishes to buy the oven from you. A purchase is then made, and the receipt has been given.The next day or two, the same customer comes back and files a complaint about the oven, claiming that the oven is not working the way you had explained and demonstrated.

In view of the matter, the customer returns the receipt and demands for a money refund.

Would you abide by the customer's demands and let yourself lose the profits that you initially gained, or would you find an idea to resolve the matter, such that both you and the customer would head for home happy?

You would prefer the second option right? But how does it work then? What you can do is to conduct another demonstration of the cake baking, but this time, use the oven that was bought by the customer. See the results! Is it a positive or negative one? If it were positive, the customer would have no reason to return the oven back right? Then discuss with the customer as to why the cake did not turn out even though the oven was working as normal. You can probably suggest to her that she could have forgotten an important ingredient in the cake. Maybe baking powder!

If that is true, you can confidently explain to her that she needs to include baking powder so that the cake will rise the way it should be. Well, that sounds as if she lost the case. But you should not make her feel like a loser. Instead, do something that can make her even at an advantage. Give her a free recipe book customized by the company you are working in that consists of all the tasty cakes that she can try to bake back home.

So there you have it! Another win-win situation. She still gets to keep the oven and also a free recipe book that allows her to try other varieties of cakes, and you get to keep the profits gained from the sale and best of all, convince her once again that your oven is constantly of high quality! The art of negotiation is never a piece of cake, but if you can acquire the confidence and power to settle a matter, the negotiation can be carried out smoothly and effectively.

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? A pre-diet measurement of two hormones related to weight regulation can help predict which dieters will be more likely to maintain their weight loss and who will not, according to a new study. The results were presented June 24 at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

With obesity rates in many countries steadily climbing, more people are turning to diets to lose weight. But, for many people, maintaining the weight loss can be extremely difficult, leading to a frustrating cycle of weight loss and gain.

"The current study shows for the first time a clinically useful marker to identify, at an early time, patients who have difficulties in maintaining their body weight," said study author Ana B. Crujeiras , Ph.D., doctor at University Hospital of Santiago de Compostela (CHUS) and Biomedical Network Research Center in Physiopathology of obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn) in Santiago de Compestela, Spain. "This difficulty is one of the most significant obstacles for obesity therapy, and currently there are no biological markers that effectively demonstrate clinical usefulness in predicting weight-loss regain."

To address this problem, investigators analyzed the role of two hormones related to appetite regulation. Leptin is made by the cells found in fat tissue, and ghrelin is mainly manufactured by cells in the stomach. Previous research by Crujeiras and co-investigators showed that patients who later regained weight had higher leptin and lower ghrelin levels before starting a restricted-calorie diet.

In the current study, investigators found the pre-diet leptin/ghrelin ratio to be two times higher among study participants who later regained weight than among those who did not. Additionally, they identified cut-off points, which predicted more than 60 percent of patients who would later regain 10 percent or more of the weight they initially lost.

"Calculating the leptin/ghrelin ratio prior to the participation in a weight-reduction program might provide the opportunity to individualize weight-loss therapeutic programs according to patients' needs, counteracting the weight-regain rate, and, as a consequence, achieving successful management of obesity," Crujeiras said.

Among women, the leptin/ghrelin ratio identified 70 percent of participants who later regained weight. Among men, the rate was even higher at 95 percent. Women, however, were less likely than men to be incorrectly identified as future weight gainers.

Eighty-eight overweight or obese patients, with a body mass index greater than 25, enrolled in the eight-week study. They were 44 percent female, their average age was 35 years, and all were white.

After an initial fast, participants' blood levels of leptin and ghrelin were measured. They then followed a reduced calorie diet for eight weeks. At the six-month follow-up, 40 dieters had regained the weight they had lost, while the remaining 48 had not. The Biomedical Network Research Centre in Physiopathology of obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn), Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII), Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness; Galician Research, Development and Technological Innovation plan (INCITE), Galician Ministry for Innovation and Industry; and Special Research about Nutrition, Obesity and Health, University of Navarra funded the study.

A new study has revealed that even when a woman loses a significant amount of weight, her friends, family and colleagues will still think of her as fat.

Even if you?ve gone from a size 20 to a size 12, the stigma of obesity never quite leaves you, say scientists, who stress that other people may still label you as greedy and lazy.

The unfair stigma was identified by researchers at Manchester University, along with their counterparts at the University of Hawaii and Monash University in Melbourne. Using volunteers to assess the outward appearance of women, some of whom had previously been fat, the scientists identified a definite obesity-related negativity. Even when the volunteers were complete strangers to the women being assessed, they still marked them down for having been fat before.

The 273 volunteers were asked to look at pictures of five women, all 31, and given notes about each. They then had to rate their attractiveness and asked if they liked them or not.

Of the five women, one had been slim all her life, another had been overweight all her life while the other three had previously been fat but had lost five stone to become a normal size.

Most volunteers regarded the woman who had always been slim as the most attractive, with the ones who had previously been obese but had lost weight lagging behind. Watching the volunteers, the scientists recorded that they also made negative comments about these women and had what they called ?fat prejudices?.

The researchers pointed out that the obesity stigma was so ?powerful and enduring that it may even outlast the obesity itself.?
They also highlighted how we as a society need to address our attitudes to obesity; after all, encouraging the obese to lose weight for their own health should be a positive thing.

Said Dr Kerry O?Brien from Manchester University?s School of Psychological Sciences: ?Many people who are perceived as ?fat? are struggling in vain to lose weight in order to escape this painful social stigma.

?We need to rethink our approaches to and views of weight and obesity. Given the great number of people who may be negatively affected by this prejudice, obesity discrimination needs to be reduced.?
