Microsoft E3 2012 Wrap-Up - Explosion.com

As expected, there was no outburst of joy and excitement over an Xbox 720 or the reveal of a handheld Microsoft system. Rather, those present at Microsoft?s E3 2012 press conference found themselves overloaded with an assortment of new games, demos, and news bits. Though the conference ended with any huge news, there were plenty of smaller tidbits of information that are sure to quench any gamers thirst.

Of course, the focal points of Microsoft?s press conference were Halo 4 and Gears of War: Judgement. Announced almost exactly a year ago, Halo 4 weighed heavy on the minds of Xbox gamers. With Halo 3 supposedly rounding off the Halo series to its conclusion, it was a pleasant surprise when developer 343 Industries was revealed to be working on a fourth installment to the critically acclaimed series. During the conference today, Microsoft was sure to show off the first bout of live gameplay in front of the waiting audience. According to the gameplay reveal, Master Chief will be squaring off against some familiar foes and a new, as-of-yet unnamed enemy. As Halo 4 is being developed by 343 Industries rather than the series? regular, Bungie, gamers can expect there to be alterations in gameplay that this reveal has yet to show.

Stretching past the Halo universe, Microsoft was sure to press on with something very recently introduced into the minds of gamers. Gears of War: Judgement was presented to the public prior to the E3 press conference today, but Microsoft was able to elaborate on some of the game?s plot details. Where-as initial speculation here had the shadowed figure on the cover of the July Game Informer labeled as a young Marcus Fenix after his ill-fated trial, Judgement will actually be showcasing series favorites Damon Baird and Augustus ?The Cole Train? Cole. Taking place shortly after Emergence Day, players will be in control of Kilo Squad, headed by Lieutenant Damon Baird. The official announcement trailer has Kilo Squad being charged with treason, cowardice, and theft of military technology as a shackled Baird smiles smugly at the figurehead judging them. Though very little more is revealed in the trailer, Microsoft did touch on a new class based multiplayer mode known as Overrun. With a 2013 release date, there is plenty of time for Judgement to truly bring something new to the Gears of War franchise.

They may not be a first party titles, but Microsoft was sure to showcase gameplay footage for Resident Evil 6 and a reveal trailer for Splinter Cell: Blacklist. For the 6th installment in the Resident Evil series, Microsoft showed off gameplay that showcased the games new cover system and the ability to attack and move at the same time ? an issue that many scoffed over in Resident Evil 4.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist takes place six months after Conviction and pits Sam Fisher as the head of a new 4th Echelon Unit. As rogue nations threaten to wage combined war on the United States, the government has little choice but to call upon the nation?s greatest spy. Blacklist will return to the series routes and offer the staple stealth gameplay but may also have a focus on fast paced action sequences ? it all depends on the players preference.

Following up its heaviest hitters, Microsoft than turned its attention to some first and third party titles that don?t hold as much weight. Amongst these titles were:

  • Forza Horizon - October 23, 2012
  • Nike Plus Kinect Trainer ? 4th Quarter 2012
  • Ascend New Gods - 4th Quarter 2012
  • Fable: The Journey ?- 4th Quarter 2012
  • Southpark: The Stick of Truth - March 5, 2013
  • LocoCycle 2013
  • Matter (Kinect) ? 2013
  • Wreckateer (Kinect) ? 2013
  • Dance Central 3 - Unannounced

On top of game releases, Microsoft had some exciting news revolving compatibility with the Xbox 360. A new program known as SmartGlass will be implemented in the current generation system, allowing players to connect devices like their tablet and smartphone to their Xbox 360. Implemented along with SmartGlass will be the integration of Internet Explorer on the Xbox 360 console.

For those awaiting a new system, Microsoft?s press conference was a pretty big let down; but for those that still see the life in these current generation systems, what the company did have to showcase was more than enough to keep us intrigued.
