McKee/S.I. Tech eliminated from baseball playoffs

McKee/Staten Island Tech found itself in an early hole and couldn?t climb out, as the Sea Gulls lost 8-0 to Beacon in a PSAL first-round baseball playoff Wednesday at Randall?s Island. ???

The ninth-seeded Manhattan school scored five runs in the first inning, taking advantage of the short dimensions at Field No. 27 to hit a pair of two-run homers off MSIT starter Pasquale Montemarano. Beacon added a run in the second and two in the third to cap the scoring. ???

?They came out swinging the bats. We knew they were a pretty good hitting team,? said MSIT coach Mike Grippo, whose squad dropped an 11-7 first-round decision to Beacon at Randall?s Island last year. ?Pasquale knew to mix it up and keep his pitches down. But sometimes, he tries to be so fine and he kept a couple of pitches out over the plate.? ???

Offensively, the No. 23 Gulls were held to five singles, including two by Ian Parisi. ???

?They pitched to contact and made all the plays,? said Grippo. ?We didn?t get a guy to third base all day.? ???

?We had a good year. This is the eighth season in a row that we?ve made the playoffs ? and in our division, that?s not easy,? said the coach, in his 10th year at the MSIT helm. ?It?s a sign of the hard work the kids put in year in and year out. I?m proud as always.? ?
